1. El Origen: Un Proyecto Secreto de Netflix (2007)
La historia de Roku está inseparablemente ligada a Netflix. El fundador de Roku, Anthony Wood, es un inventor y emprendedor en serie. De hecho, «Roku» (六) significa «seis» en japonés, porque esta era su sexta compañía.
En 2007, Wood fue contratado por el CEO de Netflix, Reed Hastings, para trabajar como Vicepresidente de Televisión por Internet. Su misión era dirigir un proyecto secreto llamado «Project: Griffin». ¿El objetivo? Construir una caja simple que permitiera a los suscriptores de Netflix ver películas y series directamente en su televisor, sin necesidad de un PC.
2. El Gran Giro: Nace el Primer Roku (2008)
El «Project: Griffin» fue un éxito… tan bueno que Reed Hastings se asustó.
Pocas semanas antes del lanzamiento, Hastings se dio cuenta de que si Netflix fabricaba su propio hardware (la «Caja Netflix»), competiría directamente con otros fabricantes de hardware como Microsoft (Xbox) y, eventualmente, Apple (Apple TV). Esto haría que esas compañías fueran reacias a incluir la aplicación de Netflix en sus dispositivos.
Hastings tomó una decisión radical: canceló el proyecto y separó la división de hardware. Le entregó la tecnología, el equipo y la inversión a Anthony Wood para que la lanzara como una compañía independiente.
En mayo de 2008, esa compañía lanzó el Roku DVP (Digital Video Player). Era una pequeña caja negra que, al principio, hacía una sola cosa: reproducir Netflix.
3. De una Caja de Netflix a una Plataforma Abierta (2009-2013)
El verdadero genio de Anthony Wood no fue solo lanzar el dispositivo, sino lo que hizo a continuación. En lugar de ser solo «la caja de Netflix», Wood decidió convertir a Roku en una plataforma abierta y neutral.
Lanzó la «Channel Store» (Tienda de Canales) en 2009, permitiendo que cualquier servicio de streaming, grande o pequeño, creara una aplicación para su dispositivo. Esto fue revolucionario.
